  • I am broadly interested in how marine microbes like phytoplankton interact with their geochemical environment, where I use molecular level tools to study the intersection of microbial physiology and biogeochemistry.

    Microbial oceanography group members are using a suite of genome-enabled approaches to examine the distribution and activities of marine phytoplankton, and how they influence cycling of carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus. Our work often uses model cultures to understand and bound field observations made on research cruises that span the from polar to tropical systems. This research emphasis provides advanced training for undergraduates, graduate students, and postdoctoral scholars and it is also used as a framework for the development and implementation of inquiry-based educational activities for children.

  • I am a biological oceanographer in the Dyhrman Microbial Oceanography group.  I received a M.Sc. in Biological Oceanography from the University of Connecticut in 2002.  For the past 21 years, I have been using molecular tools to study how photosynthetic marine microbes both shape and respond to a changing ocean.  I also make sure that no one wears flip flops in the lab, adds water to acid, or doesn't have a good time on research cruises.  I support diversity in science, and have developed activities for classrooms to not only advance ocean science literacy but also to encourage participation among underrepresented groups.

  • I’m a Bridge-to-PhD fellow in the Center for Chemical Currencies of a Microbial Planet (C-CoMP) at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, and I’m based at Columbia University in the Dyhrman Microbial Oceanography Group. I graduated from Davidson College in 2024 with a Bachelor of Science in Biology and a minor in Hispanic Studies. In the Dyhrman lab, I’m working with Annika Gomez on projects related to eukaryotic phytoplankton nutrient physiology using metatranscriptomic and lab culturing methods. More generally, I’m also interested in community dynamics, adaptations, and marine ecology. Outside of work, I love crocheting and knitting, baking, and birdwatching in the parks!

  • I am a research scientist specializing in organic geochemistry and microbial ecology. In my current appointment as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at LDEO I am working with Dr. Sarah Hurley and Dr. Sonya Dyhrman researching the physiology of phytoplankton under future ocean conditions. I am broadly interested in ocean organic carbon cycling and molecular tools to examine it.

  • Hello! I am a graduate student studying the ecological strategies of marine microeukaryotes, and how these strategies connect to higher ecosystem processes. I am particularly interested in marine diatoms, and I'm using 'omics techniques to investigate how resource supply influences their ecological strategies. When not in the lab, I can be found biking, painting, or reading.

  • I am a PhD student in the Dyhrman Microbial Oceanography Group. In 2020, I received a Bachelor of Science degree from Elon University's Department of Human Sciences, followed by completing a Post-Baccalaureate certificate from Columbia University's Department of Ecology, Evolution, and Environmental Biology in 2023. Within the Dyhrman lab, my research focuses on the intricate world of marine microbes in the context of a dynamically changing ocean. Specifically, I am interested in the physiological ecology of these microscopic organisms and their crucial role in biogeochemical processes. In addition to my research, I am passionate about science communication and engaging in community outreach efforts.

  • I'm a Simons Postdoctoral Fellow in Marine Microbiology. I got my PhD in Microbiology from MIT where I used time series metagenomics to investigate the daily dynamics of coastal giant viruses in the labs of Martin Polz & Otto Cordero. In the Dyhrman lab, I am studying the impact of phytoplankton physiology on susceptibility to virus infection using combined metatranscriptomic and culture-based approaches. When I'm not at Lamont, you can find me knitting, sewing, or biking along Riverside Park!
